Scammers and thieves stepped up their efforts to steal your money or identity in 2014 based on the double digit increase in complaints received at the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP). Overall, complaints filed by Wisconsin consumers were up more than 10% in 2014 compared to the year before, and four out of the top five categories of consumer complaints all saw substantial increases.
Here are some of the most common scams and information on how to identify them before you become a victim.
If you suspect you've been the victim of a scam, let us know. We are required to file a report even if the theft may have occurred at some other place. Be sure to request a copy of the police report for your own records and keep it in a safe place.
