Cross-country Skiing – 9.6 km

This is a very scenic trail system with moderately hilly and rolling terrain through a variety of timber types.  Excellent family trail tour.  Groomed for Classic skiing only by the Flambeau Nordic Ski Club.  A north parking lot is located 5 miles south of Hwy. 70 near Fifield on Hick’s Landing Road. To reach the south parking lot travel 7.5 miles on Hwy. 13 north of Phillips and then east 1.5 miles on Holy Cross Road; at the intersection, do not turn right, continue going straight .4 miles to the parking area.

Snowshoeing

Allowed to side of the set cross-country skiing tracks – please do not snowshoe on diagonal skiing tracks.

Horseback Riding

The Holy Cross Horse Trail is a non-motorized trail located in the Price County forest east of Hwy. 13 between Fifield and Phillips. To get to the south parking area, take Hwy. 13 north of Phillips to Holy Cross Road (gravel). Go east across the railroad tracks, then north; it is 1.5 miles to intersection where Holy Cross Road turns to the right. Continue going straight .4 miles to the parking area. Do not turn right on Holy Cross Road.  There is room for 8-10 horse trailers if they are parked parallel. To get to the north parking area, take Hwy. 70 to Hicks (Landing) Road (blacktopped) east of Fifield. Go south on Hicks Landing Road about 4.6 miles to the parking lot. There is only room for two horse trailers at this parking area.

This trail was created by the Northwoods Equestrian Trail Riders. They maintain the trail by clearing fallen trees and mowing the trails and parking lots and have furnished hitching rails, a mounting block, shelter, grill, picnic tables, fire ring, drinking water – well with hand pump, handicap-accessible toilets, trail signing and trail maps. The 20-miles of well-marked forested trails are gently rolling to flat.  There are no wet areas and horses do not require shoes.  The trails are 95 percent double wide looped with Trail A serving as a north boundary trail and Trail B serving as the south boundary trail.  All trails except Trail F are wide enough for horse and cart driving; a key for locked gates is available from the club or the Price County Forestry & Parks Department.  From the parking area, continue down the road and around the gate to get to the trail.  If you take trail A to the left, it takes about 15-20 minutes to get to the north end of trail C, if you are riding leisurely.  It takes about another 15 minutes to reach the north end of trail E. A free dispersed camping permit is required for overnight horse camping; a form is available at www.co.price.wi.us/government/ForestryDepartment, click on Permits/Regulations/Fees.
