The Solberg Trail is located northeast of Phillips on the Price County Forest and the Chequemagon-Nicolet National Forest and allows ATVs, UTVs up to 50” in width, and off-road motorcycles. The trail is a total of 9.5 miles long including trail riding and road routes and connects to the Flambeau Trail System and Sailor Lake Campground located in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. The trail has a graveled surface, crosses numerous wooden boardwalks and meanders through a variety of different forest types.

The south parking area is located northeast of Phillips at N10574 East Solberg Lake Road. From Hwy. 13 north of Phillips, turn east on Old Highway 13, drive about 1 mile, turn right onto Squaw Creek Road, then turn left on East Solberg Lake Road and continue to the parking lot. Or from Hwy. 13 in downtown Phillips, turn east on County Road H and travel about 2 miles to to East Solberg Lake Road traveling north about 4 miles to the parking lot. The parking area has an unloading/loading ramp and ample room for parking. There are no amenities at this parking area; however, there are businesses within walking distance. Directly across from parking area is the East Solberg Lake boat landing/picnic area.  The north parking area is located at Sailor Lake Campground & Picnic Area (parking pass required). Traveling east on Hwy. 70 from Fifield, turn south on Sailor Lake Road and continue to the parking area. Amenities include an unloading/loading ramp, drinking water, vaulted toilets, picnic shelter, boat landing, and 25-unit campground. A daily parking pass can be purchased at the parking area; or an annual sticker can be purchased at the CNNF office or at the following businesses:

Phillips School Forest Trail - the trail was groomed and tracked this a.m.Conditions should be very good…it will probably groomed again on Fri.

Newman Springs Trail - The trail was last groomed on February 14, is basically ice covered; until we get a couple inches more snow to fill in the ice tracks/bare spots (southern facing road slopes were bare), our grooming equipment can’t dig deep enough into the frozen trail to reset the frozen tracks.

Wintergreen Trail - The trail was last groomed on February 17 and is basically hard packed and ice covered; until we get a couple inches more snow to fill in the ice tracks/bare spots (southern facing road slopes were bare), our grooming equipment can’t dig deep enough into the frozen trail to reset the frozen tracks.

High Point Trail - It snowed a foot on Sun., Feb. 20. The trail was last groomed and tracked Thurs., Feb. 24.  The condition is excellent.

Flambeau Hills Trail - I groomed the entire trail on Feb. 23, skate condition is very good to excellent but with a few icy patches on hill sides.  Classic track varies, majority is very good, but some sun exposed areas and hilltops have a very thin base and has exposed ground and vegetation in track.

Solberg Lake/ Squaw Creek Trail - The Squaw Creek Trail was groomed Tues., February 22.  The trail is smooth and hard packed; good for snowshoeing but did not track very well for skiing.

Palmquists Farm - We had a 5-10 inch base on most of our trails after the thaw and then got 8-10 inches of new snow so our trails are in very good condition and were groomed Feb. 23. 75% of the trails are open and we will groom as needed the rest of this week and over the weekend.

Holy Cross Trail - Groomed Holy Cross ski area Feb 22.  The track was hard packed and icy under the recent snowfall.  I was able to mix a little of the hard pack with the new snow.  The classic track is not very deep in places, but is tracked for classic.  If we receive the snow predicted for Friday, I will be re-grooming the trail early next week.  I would say the hard pack is approximately 4 to 5 inches deep in some places, but there is one short area that has 1 inch of snow on it (on the return B loop).  The ski area is in good condition overall with a few places that were out in the sun in fair condition.  Overall the trail is quite skiable for this time of year.

Timm’s Hill Trail -  We received over a foot of snow Sunday night and Monday morning. I packed the THT Monday night and will groom and set tracks Tuesday night. The conditions are excellent as of Feb. 21.

Caution is advised when traveling on Soo Lake for the entire 2010-2011 winter season. Riders have made a trail across the lake, but be advised that the water was drawn down 6 feet and there are hazards and possibly flowing water.

Please note: Long John’s Resort and Lost Vegas on Soo Lake and Flambeau Field in Lugerville are closed at this time and do not have gas available as listed on the snowmobile map.  These changes were unknown when the snowmobile map was printed.

2/28/11 ~ Park Falls Sno-Gypsies - Park Falls  trails are not being groomed due to poor snow. 2/22/11 - We only received about 2”-3” of snow. Trails currently are not being groomed due to lack of snow. Open areas were bare and wooded areas are poor to fair with lots of ice in the corners. I will let you know when we resume grooming. Butternut Lake is all ice with no snow cover.

2/28/11 ~ Fifield Sno-Drovers – Our trails are not being groomed due to lack of snow.  We had quite abit of ATV traffic over the weekend.  Very few sleds.  We need more snow and soon or our trails will be done for.

The Price County portion of the Tuscobia State Trail and the Flambeau River State Forest Trail are closed to motorized use until next spring. 

The variable weather conditions made for another erratic week of fishing in the Northwoods. Panfish success has continued to be the most consistent with many anglers reporting slow but steady action on perch and bluegill. No limits but anglers were getting a meal or two from each trip.  Perch continue to be the highlight of the winter for most panfish anglers and some decent catches have been taken on small minnows fished just off the bottom in 6′ to 12′ of water.  Walleye fishing continued to be erratic – with some days resulting in 2 or 3 fish and other days finding bites hard to come by.  The best success continues to come in the low-light periods in late afternoon, with both the mud flats and gravel drop-offs producing some fair catches.  Anglers have been having the best luck on small to medium suckers fished just off the bottom in 8′ to 12′ of water in the areas mentioned.  Northern pike action has been fair to good, as the recent decline in snow cover seems to have spurred on an increase in pike activity. On many pike lakes in the north, anglers have had to move their baits up a couple feet off the bottom. This is to get above the low oxygen levels that are starting to show up on these generally shallow and weedy lakes.  Skip Sommerfeldt, DNR Senior Fisheries Biologist

The early catch-and-release trout season opens at 5 a.m. on March 5 and runs until midnight May 1. Fish managers are reporting an increased number of trout for all sizes. The best chances for success is from noon to 4 p.m. when the water is the warmest. Trout activity will increase around mid-late April after the snow melts and the fish become more active and aggressive, which will also improve anglers’ chances of success. Only artificial lures may be used while fishing for any species of fish on trout streams. Beginning this year, anglers are no longer required to use barbless hooks during the early trout season.

The gamefish season on most inland Wisconsin waters closes at the end of the day on Sunday, March 6. The gamefish season will open again on May 7. Panfish season remains open year-round.

The deadline for ice anglers to remove ice fishing shelters from inland Wisconsin waters is Sunday, March 13. Ice fishing shelters must be removed daily and when not occupied after the first Sunday following March 12 for waters north of Highway 64.
